Cantaloupe is a variety of melon. This name came from a village in Italy where this variety was cultivated in a Pope’s property.
No one exactly knows what the origin of melons is. We only know that melon was cultivated since 2000 years by Egyptian. Gradually during centuries, melons culture spread in Europe and in the world.
Production and countries of origin
Today, the production of melons is concentrated in China with almost 50% of the total production in the world. Turkey and Iran are important producers too.
Thailand is the main country producer of dried cantaloupe.
The harvesting period is during summer because melons need sun to end their ripeness.
Dried cantaloupe are available all the year but the high season is from March to June.
Dried cantaloupe can be in sticks, slices or cubes.
